Historic Apartment in Esslingen
If you are looking for a new apartment in the Stuttgart Area, you have to visit Esslingen am Neckar. This medieval town is exactly what we Americans think of when we think of Germany – cobblestone streets, half-timber houses, castle on the hill, vineyards in the distance, and canals running through it.
Esslingen am Neckar
Historic Esslingen pre-dates the city of Stuttgart as it was located directly on the Neckar river. As the town developed, the city forefathers added a series of canals which powered water wheels that helped grind wheat into flour. These canals now provide passersby with the opportunity to walk along pathways through Esslingen’s “Little Venice” as well as through the wonderful Maille Park with its cafes and play areas for children. The city has several pedestrian only thoroughfares lined with restaurants and shops. Esslingen also has many cobblestone streets and open market squares which are often filled on weekends with farmers’ markets and flea markets. You can enjoy sampling local wines while walking through the vineyards during the Esslingen Wine Hike in May. Throughout the year these same open market squares are the sites for the Strawberry Festival, Onion Festival and month-long Medieval Christmas Market, where children can enjoy parades of fantasy characters and a hand-cranked Ferris wheel while the adults enjoy glühwein. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, you can reach the local Fresh Market within a short 5-minute walk. Esslingen is also home to Germany’s oldest Sekt (German champagne) house, Kessler Sekt, which is only a 3-minute walk away from this apartment.
